Posted Apr 3, 2011

O's earn a sweep against the Rays and improve to 3-0 behind a strong start by Britton.

Zach Britton made his major league debut against the Rays today in front of 17,408 fans in attendance at the Trop. The Orioles came away with the 5-1 win, sweeping the Rays. Britton received the win and Wade Davis was handed the loss.

Luke Scott was not in today's lineup after being pulled last night for pinch runner Felix Pie in the seventh inning. He is being called day-to-day for a strained right groin.

In Spring Training, Britton went 3-0 with a 1.35 ERA in his five starts. Today, Britton went six innings, allowing one run and three hits. He surrendered three walks and struck out six in his first major league start. He threw 96 pitches with 58 as strikes.

Davis came into the game with a 3-1 record and sporting a 2.29 ERA lifetime against the Orioles.

The Birds drew first blood on a RBI single by Matt Wieters in the first inning after Brian Roberts had heads up base running, tagging up to get to second base when Sam Fuld fell down catching a Markakis fly ball.

Britton got into a jam in the bottom of the third after walking the first two batters. B.J. Upton then blooped a hit to shallow right, but the defense came through again as Markakis threw out Fuld at second base.

The Rays got their first run off an Orioles starter in the series on a squeeze play by Elliot Johnson in the same inning. Wieters gunned down Upton at third on an attempted double steal and Britton recorded the final out on a Zobrist strikeout.

Oriole bats came alive in the seventh inning. After back to back singles by Wieters and Jones, Reynolds drove in a run with a double. Hardy followed with a 2-RBI double, causing Davis to be taken out after six and a third innings. He gave up four runs on eight hits.

Rays relief finished the game, allowing three hits and one run over two and two-thirds innings. Oriole relief pitchers surrendered one hit in their three innings of work.

Matt Wieters broke out today, going 2-4 with two singles. He recorded an RBI and a run scored. Along with his presence at the plate, behind it, Wieters threw out a runner at third.

Mark Reynolds heated up as well, getting two doubles and 2 RBIs on the day. Adam Jones stole his first base of the season in the ninth inning.

The O's come back to Baltimore for tomorrow's home opener against the Detroit Tigers. Jake Arrieta is scheduled to start the 3:05 day game against Rick Porcello.
