Orioles Lose to Indians 8-2

Baltimore brings their losing streak to five as the Tribe out hit the cold Orioles bats.

Tonight Baltimore lost to Cleveland 8-2 with Justin Masterson getting the win and Zach Britton being handed his first loss on the season.

After both starting pitchers combined to retire the first 18 batters in order, the Indians came alive in the bottom of the third inning, sending eight to the plate. Matt LaPorta tripled to left field and scored on a single by Lou Marson. Adam Everett followed with another single as did Michael Brantley. Adrubal Cabrera added two more runs with a single up the middle. Shin-soo Choo came up with an additional single before two out were recorded. A fourth run was scored on a sacrifice fly by Travis Hafner.

The Birds got the third out when they appealed on A. Cabrera’s tag up. He was called out for leaving second base too soon after the appeal.

Baltimore got on the board in the top of the fourth. Nick Markakis got on base on a fielder’s choice and moved to second on a single by Derrek Lee. Markakis came around to score when Luck Scott singled up the middle, cutting their deficit to three runs.

Cleveland added another run in the sixth inning when Britton surrendered his first homerun with a solo shot to Hafner.

Despite being roughed up in the third, Britton managed to work six innings on 83 pitches. He allowed five runs on eight hits with six strike outs and a walk. He came into the game with a 0.66 ERA which went up to 2.75 after tonight. He allowed only two extra base hits, the triple to LaPorta and the homerun by Hafner.

Josh Rupe came on in relief in the seventh, facing six batters in his one-third inning of work. He gave up a leadoff to LaPorta, who was erased on a fielder’s choice by Marson. After a single by Everett and a walk by Brantley, A. Cabrera added two more runs with a bases loaded single. Choo followed with a double to left field, driving Rupe out of the game.

Jeremy Accardo took the mound, inheriting runners at second and third. He struck out Austin Kerns, who pinch hit for Duncan, and intentionally walked Hafner. Batting around, the Indians sent Orlando Cabrera to the plate, who grounded out to second base to end the inning.

In the bottom of the eighth, Koji Uehara was brought in to pitch. He sat down the batters in order, getting three fly outs on five pitches.

Taking the mound for the Indians at the start of the game, Justin Masterson went seven dominate innings, giving up only one run on four hits. He walked one and struck out three. He retired the side in order five times on the night.

In two innings of relief, the Cleveland bullpen sent Rafael Perez and Joe Smith to the mound. Perez gave up one hit in his scoreless innings of work. Smith went one inning, with three hits against him. Lee and Jones singled and moved up on defensive indifference. Reynolds drove in Lee on an infield single. With bases loaded and two down, Cesar Izturis struck out to end the game.

The only orioles to have a multi-hit game on the night was Brian Roberts, going 2-4 with two singles, and Lee, who went 2-3. Vladimir Guerrero had his hit streak brought to a halt at seven games.

Jeremy Guthrie (1-1) will take on Josh Tomlin (2-0) tomorrow for the day game.
