O's fall 5-3, getting swept by Rays

Hitting could not come through in the series finale.

Baltimore dropped the series finale to Tampa Bay as they completed the sweep, losing 5-3. Wade Davis took home the win while Brad Bergesen got the loss and Kyle Farnsworth, save.

After both pitchers got off to a shaky first inning, Bergesen and Davis settled down until the fourth inning when the Rays jumped ahead, sending eight to the plate. Bergesen gave up a double to Johnny Damon to lead off the inning and was driven in on a single by Evan Longoria. B.J. Upton added two more with a single but was caught in a rundown for the first out.

Bergesen has retired nine out of ten batters since the first inning after an intentional pass to Longoria. The first five batters reached on him in the fourth.

The Orioles got right back in it, getting the first four hitters on base in the bottom of the inning. Luke Scott started it off with a double to left field and Adam Jones got on when he was hit by a pitch. Matt Wieters brought them both in on a double to bring the O’s within one. He snapped a 1-for-18 and brought his numbers to 10-for-15 with runners in scoring position on the year.

The Rays didn’t let it stay that close long. In the top of the fifth, Ben Zobrist got it going with a leadoff single and with two outs, Matt Joyce hit into a ground rule double. Driving in two more runs, Upton got an RBI single.

Derrek Lee brought the O’s back within two as he went deep to lead off the bottom of the fifth but they never got any closer.

Bergesen came into the game 0-4 lifetime against the Rays with a 9.00 ERA. Today, he had another rough outing against the team, lasting only 4.2 innings. He gave up five runs on nine hits, surrendering two walks and getting only one strike out. He threw 21 pitches in the first but only 25 in the second and third combined until he got into big trouble in the fourth and fifth, bringing his total on the day 85 pitches as he faced 24 hitters.

Clay Rapada came out of the pen for finish the fifth in one batter. He stayed on to work the sixth, giving up a hit and a walk while recording two strike outs. Jim Johnson took over in the seventh to sit the Rays down in order. Mike Gonzalez pitched the eighth, getting the double play to only face three batters. Koji Uehara took the ninth, retiring the side in order.

Davis went 5.0 innings, allowing three runs on four hits. He struck out three and gave up a season high five walks. Rob Delaney relieved him for one inning, retiring the side in order. Joel Peralta came on in the seventh, going three up and three down. He recorded two outs in the eighth before being taken out for Kyle Farnsworth. He faced on batter for the final out in the inning and finished off the ninth, ending the game on a double play.

In the six previous games, starters were 1-5 with a 6.19 ERA, allowing 10 homers over 52.1 innings. Hitting has been just as bad with the team average being .230 and .146 with runners in scoring position, getting 2.5 runs per game. Today, the Birds left nine men on base. In the series, the Rays outscored the O’s, 19-7 and they have had four games in a row with only five this. The team falls to 2-9 with a nine game losing streak in series ending games.

J.J. Hardy could be activated as early as Tuesday after being on the DL since April 10 while Brian Matusz could come back as early as May 21.

The Orioles will send Jake Arrieta (4-1) to the mound to face Michael Pineda (4-2) as the Mariners come to town to start the three game series on Tuesday.
