The O’s came back with vengeance after the loss yesterday to beat the Rays 6-0. Brad Bergesen got his first win of the season while Baltimore handed Wade Davis his third loss.
The Birds got on top in the first inning after Derrek Lee drew a two-out walk and Vladimir Guerrero drove him in on a double to center field. Mark Reynolds added another run on a solo shot for his fourth homer of the season.
Two more insurance runs were added in the sixth inning. Adam Jones doubled to center field to begin the inning and was moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by J.J. Hardy. Jake Fox delivered the two-run shot over the left field wall.
Baltimore bats kept coming through as they got another run in the seventh when Nick Markakis began the inning with a walk and stole second. He moved over to third on a single by Guerrero, catching a break on a mistake by Zobrist. Jones recorded the RBI with another single up the middle.
With the offense going, Brian Roberts got a two-out single and stole second. Markakis followed, getting on with the intentional walk. Lee brought in the add-on run, doubling to right field.
Bergesen went the complete game scoreless, being the first pitcher to shut out the Rays this season. He retired 11in a row from the third until end the sixth, being ended on an error by Lee to start off the seventh. He continued to sit the hitters down, allowing a walk to be the only other base runner for the rest of the game. Being very efficient during his outing, Bergesen threw 103 pitches and faced 32 batters. He struck out five and walked only one, while giving up only four hits.
Davis worked 5.1 innings, giving up four runs and seven hits, including two home runs. He got three strike outs and walked three as well. Juan Cruz came out to the pen to record the last two outs of the sixth. He stayed on for one out in the seventh before being relieved by Adam Russell, who finished the inning and allowed a run to cross that was charged to Cruz. Russell worked 1.1 innings, being taken out for Brandon Gomes, who finished off the eighth inning and pitch through the end of the game as he struck out the side in order.
With the Orioles not running much on the season, today’s game was a surprise as they recorded two stolen bases with both Nick Markakis and Brian Roberts taking second. The O’s were sat down in order only twice in the game—in the second and ninth innings. Roberts, Markakis, and Jones all had multi-hit games. The Rays to get a runner to third base in each of the first three innings but the defense and pitching of Bergesen kept them from scoring.
Baltimore will end the series tomorrow as they send Jake Arrieta (4-1) to the mound to take on Andy Sonnanstine (0-0) for the rubber match.
