Q&A 27th Round Pick, Christopher Oliver

Q&A 27th Round Pick, Christopher Oliver

ITO interviews the Orioles 27th round pick, RHP Christoper Oliver from Shiloh Christian in Arkansas.

InsidetheO’s: Tell us what is going through your mind after being selected by the Orioles

Christopher Oliver: Well at the time I was playing a baseball game and didn’t know what was going on. I got a few text messages that said congrats and I knew it had to be the draft. I did not know it was the Orioles until after the game. It was probably the most exciting moment of my life.

ITO: Were you surprised it was the Orioles that selected you? Had you and the Orioles talked much before the draft?

Oliver: I wasn’t really surprised it was the Orioles because I talked to Larry Chase a lot (an area scout for the Orioles). He actually came to my house and talked me through the whole draft. We talked figures and everything that went on in rookie ball and the minors. So the Orioles kind of took me under their wing and explained to me how everything works.

ITO: Do you have any idea what the Orioles organization or farm system is like?

Oliver: When Larry Chase came to my house he talked to me through all of the affiliates. The only thing I know is that they also took a right handed pitcher with the 26th round pick.

ITO: What type of pitches do you throw and at what speeds? Give us a scouting report please- what are your strengths and what do you need to work on the most?

Oliver: Right now I throw a two-seam fastball, four-seam fastball, sweeping curveball, a twelve-six curve, and a circle change-up. I throw my fastballs any where between 88-92 (four-seam). The two-seam is anywhere from 87-90.

ITO: Would you call yourself a strike out pitcher or a pitch to contact pitcher?

Oliver: I am really aggressive so I like to strike people out and go after people no matter who they are. I usually rely on my defense.

ITO: What would you say your out pitch is?

Oliver: I would say to a right hander it is the sweeping curveball and to the lefties its the circle change

ITO: What are your strengths? Weaknesses?

Oliver: I would say my strengths are that I can throw all three pitches for strikes at any time. I would say my weakness is my mechanics get a little off sometimes.

ITO: Do you know your stats from this season?

Oliver: I think i pitched 66 innings. I had a 1.60 ERA. I allowed 25 hits and struck out 103.

ITO: Did you have a favorite team growing up or a favorite player?

Oliver: St. Louis Cardinals have been my favorite team. Ever since I saw Miguel Tejada in the home run derby a few years back, I kinda started liking the Orioles a little bit actually. My favorite player is probably Tim Lincecom. I really like the way he competes.

ITO: Who would you compare your stuff to at the Major League level so Orioles' fans can get an idea of what you're like on the mound? and why?

Oliver: Probably Tim Lincecom

ITO: What would you say is your best moment in baseball and why?

Oliver: Either Back-to-back state championships or when I threw a no-hitter this year.

ITO: Are you looking to sign quickly and get your professional career started right away?

Oliver: I am just going to see what the Orioles say and see what Arkansas says and look at the pros and cons of both and just kind of make my decision from there. They said they will follow me through the summer and make an offer at the end of it.

ITO: What do you think you will bring to the Orioles organization?

Oliver: I have a real strong mentality. If someone hits a homerun, I shake it off and move on to the next guy. I am really aggressive and love to compete. I dont like to lose.
