Outfielder Ronnie Welty led the way in a Baysox win on Monday over the Akron Aeros.

The 24-year old outfielder Ronnie Welty has hit three home runs and batted in a team-leading 17 runs with a .415 batting average in 13 games with Single-A+ Frederick this season.

His 56 plate appearances were enough for him to receive a call from Bowie, and he began his second career stint in Double-A Monday night with the Baysox. This all happened just after being named the Player of the Week.

His RBI triple in the bottom half of the fourth inning, following an RBI single by catcher Caleb Joseph, gave Bowie the only runs of the game.

“I went up there with a lot of confidence and stayed aggressive. I was just looking for a pitch to hit, and I found it,” said Welty following his 1-for-3 debut.

In 122 games with the Baysox in 2011, Welty's average was .228 with 13 HRs and 45 RBIs. His offensive numbers had dropped from his 2010 stat-line, but he's heading in to this season with a lot of confidence, he says.

“All that experience (from last year) has helped me out a lot,” he said. “Starting in Single-A this year has certainly motivated me a little bit.”

The 2-0 victory over Akron (9-6) snapped a two-game Bowie (7-11) losing streak. In what ended up being one of the shortest games of the season thus far (2:21), Bowie used three pitchers in the four-hit shutout of the Aeros.

Starter Jacob Pettit earned the victory and improved to 3-0 on the year after five solid innings with three strikeouts. Stuart Pomeranz went three innings, surrendering just one hit, while Greg Burke came on and retired the Aero hitters in order to close the game out in the ninth. It was his first save of the season in what was his second appearance.

“Our pitchers did a great job. Made some big pitches and did a nice job of getting out of some jams,” said Manager Gary Kendall on the pitching.

Bowie has two more games left in the current home stand--both against Akron--before hitting the road again to face Harrisburg on Friday.
