Most assignments in the St. Louis Cardinals player development ranks remain the same from 2013 to 2014.

Continuity is the word for the St. Louis Cardinals minor league staffs in 2014, announced on Thursday.

All eight sets of managers, pitching coaches and hitting coaches from Memphis through the Dominican Summer League from 2013 are back, with the only change being three managers switching chairs.

Former MLB catcher Dann Bilardello moves from the skipper of Peoria to Palm Beach, one-time Midwest League hitting coach Joe Kruzel returns as manager of Peoria, while Johnny Rodriguez, Palm Beach’s manager the last two seasons, shifts to Johnson City.

The leaders at the system’s top two affiliates, Pop Warner at Memphis and Mike Shildt at Springfield, remain in their jobs for 2014. Other returning managers are Oliver Marmol at State College - The Cardinal Nation Manager of the Year for 2013, Steve Turco with the Gulf Coast League and Fray Peniche in the DSL.

One piece of news is that the replacement for Brent Strom as Minor League Pitching Coordinator has been named. The organization did not stray far, naming incumbent mechanics analyst and pitching rehab coordinator Tim Leveque to replace Strom.

The two had worked together closely in the past. (The Cardinal Nation subscribers can check out this August article in which Leveque explains how the organization uses the TrackMan radar system to assist pitchers.)

For 2014, Paul Davis will take on the role of Minor League Pitching Coach and Coordinator of Pitching Analytics in addition to his role as Johnson City pitching coach.

There is also scouting news. Former Midwest Cross-checker Mike Roberts has been named a Special Assistant to Amateur Scouting. Roberts is the longest tenured member of the Cardinals scouting department with over 30 years of experience in various roles.

Matt Swanson, previously the system’s Area Scout based in Northern California, will fill Roberts’ old position as Midwest Cross-checker.
