Prospect Countdown: #33 Paco Figueroa

Prospect Countdown: #33 Paco Figueroa

Paco Figueroa has made a steady climb through the Orioles' system. While he lacks any standout tools, his manager likes to compare him to all-star Brian Roberts. Inside, read a detailed scouting report on the 24 year old second baseman.

The Stats

DOB: 02/19/83

B-R/T-R

HT: 5-11 WT: 182 POS: 2B

Bowie Baysox - (95 G, 350 AB, .280/.365/.354)

Background

A senior sign out of the University of Miami, Paco Figueroa was drafted in the 9th round of the 2005 draft. After a solid full-season debut in high-A Frederick last season, Figueroa again put up promising numbers in double-A Bowie.

Offense

Figueroa lacks any true standout tools, but he is solid in several areas. As his manager from the past two years, Bien Figueroa (no relation) told ITW "He's a good player and he's going to hit. He reminds me of Brian Roberts when he was younger. He's just a baseball player."

Figueroa should be able to maintain a ~.280 average and draw his share of walks. He's also capable of lining a few doubles and has plus speed. He's always a threat to run, but he gets caught far too often. Figueroa is equally capable against both lefties and righties.

Defense

Figueroa isn't a standout defender, but he is solid at second base. He also has seen time in th outfield and profiles as a utility guy if he can't win a starting role. He has reliable hands and average range.

Timetable

Entering his age 25 season, Figueroa is close to a finished product. If the Orioles follow through with the rumored trade of Brian Roberts, Figueroa should see some time in Baltimore in 2008. Although his bat may not be enough to handle an every day role, he has the versatility and athleticism to handle a utility role. However, there was a time when many believed Brian Roberts' bat wouldn't be enough to handle an every day role and Figueroa has a similar broad-based skillset.
