Background

It's been a long road for the 26 year old right-hander, but Cory Doyne is finally on the verge of breaking through to the major leagues. He had a near-historic season with the triple-A Norfolk Tides; he set the franchise saves record, was named to the International League All-Star squad and the Topps' triple-A All-Star team, and he was named minorleaguebaseball.com's top reliever in triple-A baseball. And, oh yeah, he made his major league debut.

Scouting Report

When you see a pitcher in his mid-20's putting up the gaudy stats that Doyne has in the minor leagues, it is natural to assume he is a trick pitcher or is getting by on deception. After all, why else would he still be in the minor leagues? In Doyne's case, however, he has a legitimate major league arm. The Orioles just wanted to make sure that Doyne's progression with his command was for real.

Doyne's best pitch is a low-90's fastball that plays up in relief. It has boring action on right-handers, though he was equally effective against lefties. He also throw a solid slider that he uses to induce groundballs in certain situations.

Timetable

Doyne was taken off the 40-man roster by the Orioles during some player shuffling at the beginning of the off-season. Fortunately, the Orioles were able to re-sign him on a minor league deal. Nevertheless, Doyne is ready for a clean shot at a major league role. Given that the Orioles look like they will have plenty of spots in the bullpen available, Doyne's decision to return was a wise one. His ultimate ceiling is as a right-handed 7th inning set-up man. He doesn't need to be hidden from lefties, but hasn't handled too many appearances over an inning in the past few years.
