Background
After an impressive career at El Camino Real High School, Tyler Kolodny expected to be drafted in the top ten rounds of the 2007 draft. He ended up going to the Orioles in the 16th round and the organization is happy he fell that far. Despite growing up a Dodgers fan on the other side of the country, Kolodny adjusted quickly to life on the east coast and made an immediate impression.
Offense
An average runner, Kolodny's ticket to the majors is his advanced bat. He has a level stroke that produces line drives and average power. He isn't afraid to take a walk and, unlike most teenagers, had little problem picking up breaking balls.
Kolodny told ITW "I do have power, but I get a lot of base hits and doubles and I’m a tough out. As a hitter, I would say, is my best asset."
What most impressed the organization is the work that Kolodny puts into every at bat. He is always prepared for whatever pitcher he faces and is constantly tinkering with his swing. He also seemed to make progress hitting to the opposite field.
Defense
Although not a standout defender, Kolodny should be able to stick at third base as he moves up the ladder. His arm strength is average, but he will have to improve his accuracy and his reads off the bat.
Timetable
Despite starting his professional career in the lowest stateside level in the O's organization, the team feels that he is ready to be challenged. He'll likely start next season in rookie-level Bluefield, but he could see some at bats in short-season Aberdeen before the year is out. Kolodny is still a long ways away, but the Orioles are legitimately excited about his offensive potential. He already looks like a steal in the 16th round of the draft.
